The Passion of the Snake: An Evening of Belly Dance
Saturday, September 23 2006

Oriana (Angie Jenkins) is very excited to present her third show at the Ganges Yoga Studio, "The Passion of the Snake: An Evening of Belly Dance" on Saturday, September 23 at 7:00 pm.

Oriana has been Salt Spring Island's most visible belly dancer for the last 2 years as a teacher & performer. Her credits include dancing with San Francisco dj, Cheb i Sabbah, opening last summer's Ganga Giri show, as well as performing at last year's Adam Shaikh dance party at Beaver Point Hall. She is very proud of her students, the Gypsy Island Belly Dance Troupe, who will be performing some newly choreographed group pieces and solos and who will be joined by event organizer/promoter, Shai, (aka "Shai-k-Yerbooty"), on doumbek (Middle Eastern drum). The show will also feature dancers from Victoria as well as special guest, Samantha Hasthorpe, of the UK. Samantha has been making waves in the world of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance and has been touring Vancouver Island as a teacher and performer.

Also joining the show is Nick Bantock, internationally-acclaimed author of Griffin & Sabine. He and Oriana met at her yardsale in July. They discovered, in conversation, a mutual interest in Middle Eastern culture and dance. She later invited him to do a reading at her show, not knowing his new novel, Windflower, is actually about a gypsy dancer!

Em-ceeing the show is Laughlin Meagher of Drop Radio fame.

Tickets are $12 at the door. Middle Eastern finger foods and tea may be available.
