What is The Nia Technique?
The Nia Technique is a joyful, rich, and powerful fitness practice. It is a fusion of elements inspired by dance, martial arts, and yoga. Nia blends an Eastern philosophy of self-healing with Western science about body mechanics. For the fitness fanatic, Nia offers a high-powered workout. For the dance lover, Nia uses a wide variety of world music, pop rhythms, ethnic sounds, and other musical styles to create a base for a simple choreography of steps and stances. For the spiritual being, Nia taps into creativity and inspiration through imagery and the power of words.

Nia is done in bare feet. It is low impact by nature, and employs the body’s natural movement patterns and range of motion. It provides an aerobic workout, stretching and toning of the muscles, and builds agility, mobility, flexibility, stability and strength.
Nia is suitable for everyone, all ages and body types, all levels of fitness. Students are encouraged to find their own level of intensity within the dance of Nia. The movements are adaptable and fluid, not rigid. The class moves together, highlighting synergies and relationships rather than the differences and spaces between people. The blending of styles, energies, and capabilities creates community and friendship among students.
